DIGITAL SCARS

People go in and out of the digital world as a matter of course. The digital world leaves an invisible mark on the human soul. What happens when you are damaged in this world? This is what we call digital scars. What do these incoming messages, hateful online comments, frustrating messages feel like?

Design choices

The 3D programme Blender crashed, so I thought: why not make the scars in real life? I am a fan of trying and visualizing my ideas in real time first. I think you can see so much more character in things that are real. This is harder to achieve when you do it on the computer. I bought a large piece of fake leather and pushed objects through it that came from the digital world. I stretched the leather between a laundry rack and it flew off about 8 times, which is a really good exercise for your patience. But in the end it worked!

CREDITS

This project was a collaboration with Enrique Krahe, Lara Sari & Zuzanna kross. The videos were part of a larger physical installation. This space made the digital environment physical.

NN North sea jazz festival poster

My entry for the NN North Sea Jazz Festival poster competition was a typographic poster that visualised the playful nature of jazz. I am proud to say that the poster was nominated and was one of the designs displayed at the festival itself.

Design choices

I am a fan of trying to visualise my ideas in real life first. I think you can see so much more character in things that are real, which is harder to achieve with computer made things. The typography is constructed from recording tape carefully wrapped around iron wire. The inspiration for the content and colours? Bee movie! In which the main character himself is a jazz lover.

Human
nest

NEST is a series of knitting and weaving patterns inspired by the fabric of birds: moss.

About Nest

A bird is making a cosy and warm nest for its future chicks. It uses moss to insulate the nest and make a warm bed. A deer in the forest is resting on moss, curled up on a mattress made by the forest. Moss has a strong connection and association with the feeling of security and warmth. The feeling of home. Humans knit and weave blankets of fibres to create their own nests. In a way, moss is the knitting and weaving for animals. For these patterns I have brought the fabric of the forest into the human home environment. So that they can knit or weave their own nests. By converting the three dimensional moss into a two dimensional pattern using a low resolution scanner, the moss is directly translated into a black and white pattern that can be used for knitting and weaving.

Design choices

This project was created by applying an iterative design process. By thinking through making. To keep track, I kept a record of my progress in a book, constantly reflecting and evaluating my actions.

Living thread

In the process of making this project I also discovered how to spin moss inside wool, to make a living thread. A project I would like to continue another time.

3d-scan playground

One of my more recently design playgrounds is the 3D scanner. I am intrigued by how a real object changes if it gets squished into a two dimensional and then pulled apart in a three-dimensional object.

SPIEGEL-
BOS

Whenever I walk under the trees, I feel inspired. The forest has a beautiful collection of small miracles. With my project "spiegelbos," I try to bring these wonders of the forest to our homes by making a mirror that looks like a puddle of water. This surrealistic-looking mirror will take you back under the trees for a moment, providing a moment of rest in your own home.

Design choices

The first small mirrors are experiments of how to print an image on a mirror, this was not so easy as I thought it would be, but alot of new techniques were discovered in the progress. From laser cutting to working with a flatbed printer.

The google bible

The Google Bible is a publication that aims to raise a critical voice about the personal information we willingly hand over to companies like Google. It uses the conspiracy theory of the Google Church as a conversation starter.

About the Google Bible

In November 2021 co-founder of Apple Steve Wozniak asked a simple question: “Nowadays, where do you go to ask questions? The answer starts with ‘go’, and it’s not God”. The answer and it’s meaning made many peoples imagination run wild and a new conspiracy theory was born: The Google Church. Google knows everything, where you are, what you do. In the past the only one to believed to have this power was a God. This book tries to make the reader critically self reflect on their online activity and the power we willingly give to a company, in the process making it almighty.

Design choices

By combining classic elements of the old bible such as typography, composition, size and imagery with modern elements of our society such as the google colours, ultra glossy paper and the use of a meme format, I aimed to merge two contradictions into one. Bringing together two time periods. The first part of the book takes the reader into the depths of the Google Church. The second part shows the problems of making Google omnipotent.

Way of working

I think I spend around 30 euro's in test prints. Searching for the perfect fonts and researching imagery. I collected everything on 4 big A1 sheets to keep track of my work.
